Garrett's Popcorn

I remember when I was young, Mom would bring home yummy Garrett's Popcorn on payday. It was such a treat! Fresh warm cheese popcorn mixed with sweet caramelcrisp (a.k.a The Mix) is pure indulgence.

The Garrett's on Michigan Ave can have lines down the block, the one on State Street is always packed to the walls. Lucky for me, there's a Garrett's inside my office building (Citicorp at 500 W. Madison) and the lines are only long there during the evening rush when folks are grabbing a bag of The Mix before hopping on the Metra commuter trains....hopefully bringing that deliciousness home to their own eager little kids.

Today, the boys came downtown and before they left, we made a quick stop at Garrett's and enjoyed a few cheesy handfuls in the warm sunshine.

Chef Susan Goss and wine director Drew Goss of West Town Tavern have partnered with Southern Foodways Alliance (SFA) to host a four-course Fried Chicken Throwdown Dinner on Sunday, March 11, which will also feature two unique films that showcase the spirit of Southern cooks and their passion for fried chicken. Chef Goss will serve three different styles and flavors of fried chicken, each paired with an excellent wine from Garretson Winery. A portion of the proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Southern Foodways Alliance Documentary Film Initiative.

SFA director John T. Edge, who is also a contributing editor to Gourmet magazine and author of several books including Fried Chicken: An American Story, will share stories about this Southern food icon. And he will screen two films by the SFA’s own Joe York: “Hot Chicken,” a portrait of Prince’s Hot Chicken in Nashville, Tenn., as well as excerpts from “Scotch and Milk: Saving Willie Mae's,” the tale of volunteer efforts to reinvigorate a New Orleans restaurant devastated by flood waters in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The March 11 event features chef Susan’s fried chicken and two recipes from venerable southern restaurants. The menu includes:

First: Scotch House Fried Chicken with Lora Tatum-Smith’s; Buttermilk Biscuit and Apricot Chutney; Garretson “Cornbread Nation” Cuvée White
Second: Prince’s Hot Chicken with Caesar Salad; 2005 Garretson “Celeidh” Rosé, Paso Robles
Third: West Town Tavern Fried Chicken, Garlic Mashed ‘Taters; Southern Greens and Wild Mushroom Gravy; Garretson “Cornbread Nation Cuvée” Red
Dessert: Lemon Chess Pie with Fresh Berries and Whipped Cream

The Southern Foodways Alliance (www.southernfoodways.com) documents and celebrates the diverse food cultures of the American South. Members include food lovers from all walks of life including cookbook authors, culinary historians, food journalists, and inquisitive eaters.

QotD: Mmm...Brunch

Mimosas, strawberries, denver eggs, more mimosas, raspberries, potatoes and onions, more mimosas, bagels & cream cheese, maybe two more mimosas...no dessert. That would just be greedy :-) *hiccup* fill 'er up

Seriously - this should have been What is the Best Place to Brunch

For me this is a tie between Thyme Cafe and The Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues.

Thyme Cafe was an intimate place with, beautiful surroundings and a live brazillian jazz vocalist. Unlimited Mimosas and a fanstastic buffet spread for $25. However, they've recently closed and I am heartbroken. (Miss you Zach and Meat Carver Guy (call me))

The Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues is PRICEY!!!! But was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday with my Mom for Grandparents Day. 2 adults and 2 kids = $109. But well worth it as there are 3 to 4 buffet stations, unlimited Mimosas (a Must!) and wonderful Gospel Choirs that take you to Church!

Of course, you can never go wrong at Cracker Barrel - A Country store AND Country Cookin' - what more could you want?? Mimosas. :-)

What's your favorite restaurant?

My favorite restaurant (this year) is Souk at 1552 North Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago.

Truly the best Mediterranean and Hookah Bar in Chicago. The Steak is the best in a town full of fabulous Steak Houses. In addition, they have a knock out Belly Dancer on Saturday nights and live music. A hidden jewel.
